Honors American Literature focuses on developing writing skills while improving the student's understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of our country through the study of American literature. Students write organized, multi-paragraph, essays that support a thesis; identify and analyze elements of literature, literary devices, style, and themes of American literature; evaluate literature and/or film according to criteria; describe human situations or events in a narrative essay; demonstrate the use of library and other resources for research; analyze the culture of a period as expressed through major writings, publications, art, architecture, technology, music, daily life, or customs; develop appreciation of the rich diversity of classic and contemporary literature representing different cultural, age, and gender groups; and improve reading comprehension skills through various pieces of literature/styles.
